UK Student Visa from Gujarat: Step-by-Step Guide

UK Student Visa from Gujarat: Step-by-Step Guide

If you are planning a UK student visa from Gujarat, the process can look like a long list of deadlines. In practice it follows a clear order: choose a course, get an offer, receive your CAS, arrange your money, take a TB test, apply, prove your identity, get a decision and travel. Most avoidable problems come from doing these steps in the wrong order, or too late. This guide walks you and your family through the UK student visa process one step at a time, with a realistic timeline at the end.

Step 1: Start with an honest profile assessment

Before you look at rankings, take stock of where you stand: your academic record, any gaps in your studies, your English level, your family's budget and your plans after the course. A visa officer may ask about the same things later, so think them through now.

You can do this on your own, or with a UK study visa consultant in Gujarat. At UK Consultant we offer a free profile assessment with no obligation, where we talk through realistic options with you and your parents.

Step 2: Choose your course and university

Your course must be with a university or college that holds a student sponsor licence. You can check any institution on the GOV.UK register of licensed student sponsors.

Beyond that, choose a course you can explain. It should follow on sensibly from your previous study or work and connect to your career plans. If you cannot say in a few sentences why this course, this university and the UK, keep looking. You can browse options on our UK universities page and read more about studying in the UK.

Undergraduate applications usually go through UCAS, while most postgraduate applications are made directly to the university.

Step 3: Apply and receive your offer

Most offers are first conditional – you have a place once you send, for example, final marksheets or an English test score. When every condition is met, the offer becomes unconditional.

For the visa, the Home Office expects English at CEFR level B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level. For degree-level courses, the university can assess your English itself; otherwise you may need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider. The GOV.UK knowledge of English page lists the accepted ways to prove it.

Step 4: Accept your offer and get your CAS

Once you have accepted an unconditional offer, the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) – an electronic reference number you need before you can apply. Some universities ask for a tuition deposit or check your finances first, so ask early what yours needs.

Two things to remember:

  • You must apply for your visa within 6 months of receiving your CAS.
  • Check every detail on the CAS – name, date of birth, passport number, course dates – against your passport. Errors are far easier to fix before you apply.

Our UK student visa documents checklist covers everything else that goes into your file.

Step 5: Arrange your funds

Applicants from India need to show money for living costs and course costs. For living costs, that is £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month outside London, for up to 9 months, plus any unpaid first-year course costs shown on your CAS. The money must be held for 28 days in a row, and that 28-day period must end within 31 days of your application date.

Plan ahead, because the money may have to sit in the right account for several weeks before you apply. Our guide to funds and bank statement rules explains what counts, with a worked date example.

Step 6: Take your TB test

India is on the list of countries where applicants need a tuberculosis (TB) test if they are coming to the UK for 6 months or more. The test must be done at a Home Office-approved clinic; certificates from other clinics are not accepted. At the time of writing, the GOV.UK list of approved clinics in India includes clinics in Ahmedabad and Surat – check the current list before you book.

The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray, so time the test carefully. Take the passport you will use for your visa application to the appointment.

Step 7: Submit your online application

You apply online on GOV.UK. From outside the UK, the earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts. The GOV.UK Student visa page sets out the full rules, so read it before you start.

Fill in the form carefully: your answers must match your documents exactly.

Step 8: Prove your identity (biometrics)

You need to prove your identity as part of your application. If you are asked to attend a visa application centre, you book the appointment after submitting the online form, then show your passport and have your fingerprints and photograph (biometric information) taken. Centres are listed on the GOV.UK visa application centre page.

Step 9: Be ready for a credibility interview

UKVI may invite you to a short interview, usually by video, to check that you are a genuine student. Expect questions about your course, university, why the UK, funding and plans after study – and your answers must match your application. Our guide to preparing for a UK credibility interview goes into the questions in detail, and our article on UK student visa refusal reasons explains what tends to go wrong.

Step 10: Decision, eVisa and travel

From outside the UK you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks.

If your application is successful, you get an eVisa – an online record of your immigration status rather than a sticker in your passport. You set up a UKVI account to access it and link the passport you will travel on.

For a course longer than 6 months you can arrive up to 1 month before it starts, but never before the start date on your visa. After graduating, you may be able to stay on with the Graduate visa.

A realistic UK student visa timeline

Universities work to their own schedules, but for a September start a sensible outline is:

  • 9 to 12 months before – profile assessment, course shortlist, academic documents together, English test booked if you need one.
  • 6 to 9 months before – applications submitted; offers arrive at different times depending on the university.
  • 3 to 5 months before – offer conditions met, place accepted, funds moved into the right account.
  • 2 to 3 months before – CAS received, TB test taken, 28-day funds period completed.
  • 6 to 10 weeks before – visa application submitted and identity appointment attended.
  • The final month – decision, accommodation and flights.

Build in a few weeks of spare time in case an offer condition or bank letter takes longer than expected. For a month-by-month plan, see our September 2027 intake timeline for Gujarat students.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the UK student visa process take?

Allow 9 to 12 months from your first assessment to travel. The visa stage is shorter: you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts and will usually get a decision within 3 weeks.

Can I apply without a consultant?

Yes, you apply directly on GOV.UK. A consultant can help you plan, check documents and prepare for an interview, but the decision is always made by UKVI.

When should I take my TB test?

Once you know your intake and before you apply. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the x-ray, so do not take it too early.

Can I bring my family with me?

Only in limited cases, such as a PhD or other research-based postgraduate degree. See our guide to UK dependant rules for students.
